Champaign Schools Presents Possible High School Layout at Spalding Park

At Friday’s Spalding Park Neighborhood Meeting, which drew more than 80 residents, Superintendent Dr. Judy Wiegand and representatives from Gorski Reifsteck/DLR Group presented a possible layout for a new Central High School at Spalding Park.

At Monday’s meeting, the Champaign Board of Education heard an update from Gorski Reifsteck/DLR Group about the high school programming and planning process that has taken place in recent weeks.

The Gorski Reifsteck/DLR Group team of architects has worked closely with District teachers and leaders to determine academic programs housed at each school and to ensure adequate space is allocated for the growing student population.

At Monday’s meeting, the Champaign Board of Education heard an update from Gorski Reifsteck/DLR Group about the high school programming work that will be taking place in the coming weeks and months, and discussed a draft Master Facilities Plan for the District as a whole.

Champaign-based Gorski Reifsteck and the nationally-renowned DLR Group were hired at the April 13 Board meeting for professional architectural services that will assist the District to program and plan for a new Central High School and a renovated Centennial High School.

The Champaign Unit 4 Board of Education approved a contract Monday to hire Champaign-based Gorski Reifsteck and DLR Group for professional architectural services that will assist the District to program, plan, and design a new Central High School and a renovated Centennial High School. The Gorski Reifsteck/DLR Group team was selected as the most outstanding from the group of twelve submissions received by the District.

Board of Education Announces Final Four Sites for New Central High School

At Monday’s meeting, the Board of Education announced its top four sites for a new Central High School, each located along Olympian Drive. Members of the architectural firm Gorski-Reifsteck presented on each of these top sites and presented a summary of the work completed to help narrow the selection. The Board will be selecting their top site in closed session and will announce the site once negotiations have been finalized.

The Champaign Board of Education is currently considering 15 sites for the location of a new Central High School. A map of all sites under consideration is now available on the Future Facilities website. Champaign Unit 4 School District will host two Future Facilities Community Dialogue sessions on February 12 at the I-Hotel and Conference Center from 3-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. The Community Dialogue invites all community members, students, teachers, parents, and business owners to offer their input on possible options for updating or replacing some of the District’s aging school buildings.
